If you want to write about your own life, but don’t know where to start, the personal essay offers a unique and accessible formal container requiring both deep self-reflection and cultural observation. In this class, we will study selections from Philip Lopate’s seminal collection, The Art of the Essay, including essays by Montaigne, Woolf, and Baldwin. Simultaneous to studying the masters of this genre, students will brainstorm, draft, and revise their own personal essay through in-class prompts, writing exercises, and teacher feedback.
