During its 300-year history, the banjo has at times been an object of ridicule and scorn. But, as with most prejudices, those reactions reflect a limited understanding of the banjo's role in shaping American music and music around the world. Both melodic and percussive, the banjo is a uniquely expressive instrument with the power to stir the soul. This course offers an overview of the banjo's rich history, along with an introduction to a variety of playing styles. You'll learn several traditional right-hand techniques, including down-picking (frailing and clawhammer) and one- and two-finger up-picking, while exploring different tunings. If you don't have a banjo, but are curious, come anyway; this class will help you decide whether to get one. The emphasis will be on accompanying yourself as you sing.
