21st Century Short Form: A Reading Course

Do you wish you were more of a reader? Reading, like writing, is more fun when we do it in community. Each week, we will discuss a pair of texts published after 2000, mixing short stories, essays, theory, memoir, and journalism. Through writing prompts, partner work, and group discussion, we will explore these works individually and in relation to one another, seeking greater enjoyment in our reading while reflecting on how writers are responding to the unique challenges of our contemporary moment. The reading list includes works by George Saunders, Mark Greif, Tony Tulathimutte, Alexander Chee, Torrey Peters, Paul Preciado, Youngmi Mayer, Deborah Eisenberg, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Octavia Butler.

$10 materials fee payable to the instructor at the class for printouts. Bring a notebook to write in; pen and paper strongly encouraged.
