In this hands-on workshop, we’ll dye with osage orange, sandalwood, and cutch, materials rooted in regional use and global histories of trade and extraction. Together they produce a range of golds, ambers, russets, warm browns, olives, and near-blacks, with layered overdye effects that shift across the cloth. We’ll explore resist techniques using folded clamping with autumnal forms, alongside mordant and stencil applications for layered tonal variation. Along the way, we’ll consider how these dyes are grown, harvested, and circulated within broader material histories. Participants will leave with several finished textile pieces that record the process, color, and transformation.
Notes:
$20 materials fee payable to the instructor at class (cash, check, or venmo).
