In this two-session walking tour you’ll be transported to the colonial era, when the “Great Road” was a dusty, rutted thoroughfare that carried people, animals, and goods into the city and out to the backwoods. Once bustling with homes and businesses serving the needs of the day, Germantown Avenue would go on to become one of America’s most historic streets. This walking tour begins and ends at Market Square and follows the Avenue between Logan and Hortter Streets, with a refreshment stop midway. Along the way participants will peel back the layers to see through vintage drawings and photographs, how the street appeared in colonial times. You’ll hear stories of how residents lived, loved, entertained themselves, schemed and struggled, and made and lost fortunes. After this excursion into history, you’ll never look at Germantown Avenue the same way again.
