"Strange Narratives, Resilient Bodies" explores how artists have registered the trauma and hope of an uncertain world. Comprised of works by living and historical figures in the arts of Philadelphia in Woodmere’s collection, the exhibition is filled with images that convey mystery, the supernatural, and enigmatic combinations of depicted objects. The artworks embody the poignant and aspirational facets of human experiences, for which seemingly ordinary elements become profound symbols of our collective consciousness. This exhibition represents Woodmere's celebration of the Centennial of the Birth of Surrealism, a cultural and artistic movement that championed the mystical and irrational, seeking inspiration from modern psychology and Indigenous art and knowledge.
