Throughout time, colors have enlivened works of art with sparkle, symbolism, and stories. From Jan van Eyck’s green dress, Kerry James Marshall’s use of black to the white sheen of Sarah Bernhardt’s marble sculptures, artists animate their work with hues that vibrate, calm, and emote. By considering a range of color-connected ‘isms, we will delve into the life and times of key works of art that feature powerful colors derived from natural and invented pigments that allow artists their full scope of expression. Our conversational-style class features a diversity of artists and includes short videos to enrich the discussion.
