During their adulthood some of our children may face addiction, mental health issues or other obstacles to building an independent life. What do we do? Ignore their needs? Cut them off? Use tough love? Loving detachment is a healthier option. It is a process by which we explore what has gone before in our lives. By identifying the goals we still hold in life and the obstacles that keep us from reaching those goals, we open the door to changing our thinking. When we develop clarity regarding our own needs and those of our adult children, we are able to begin to lovingly detach from our over involvement and make changes to create a more satisfying and balanced life for ourselves.
